Can Cataracts Come Back After Surgery?

“Doctor, can cataracts come back after the operation?”
The simple answer is — No, a cataract does not come back once it has been removed.
What Happens During Cataract Surgery?
During cataract surgery, the eye’s natural lens, which has become cloudy, is removed. It is then replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
Once the natural lens has been removed, a cataract cannot develop again in the same eye.
However, some patients may experience blurry or cloudy vision again months or even years after cataract surgery. This can sometimes make them feel that their cataract has returned.
But this is usually not a recurrence of cataract.
What Is Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO)?
The condition is known as Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), sometimes commonly referred to as a secondary cataract.
After cataract surgery, the artificial lens remains in a thin natural capsule inside the eye. Over time, this capsule can become cloudy, causing symptoms similar to cataracts, such as:
- Blurred or cloudy vision
- Reduced clarity
- Glare or sensitivity to bright lights
- Difficulty seeing clearly
Although the symptoms may feel similar, it is important to understand that PCO is not the cataract coming back.
How Is PCO Treated?
Fortunately, Posterior Capsule Opacification can usually be treated quickly and effectively with a YAG laser capsulotomy.
This is a simple laser procedure that takes only a few minutes. The laser creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again.
The best part is that another cataract surgery is usually not required.
Don’t Ignore Blurry Vision After Cataract Surgery
If your vision becomes blurry months or years after cataract surgery, there is no need to panic. It does not necessarily mean that your cataract has returned.
